2012 WGC Meeting and Event Notes:

December 13, 2012: Annual Meeting and Christmas Luncheon.

November 8, 2012: "Color in the Garden," presented by Amy Sampson.

November 1, 2012: The WGC Tea with special guest Ruth L, noted Floral Designer, held at the Watertown Golf Club, was a great success. Thanks to all the dedicated members who contributed so much and to the community for its continued support.

October 11, 2012:  "Horizon Wings Program on Raptors," presented by Mary Beth.

*September 13, 2012:  Photo Studies of Connecticut Historical Gardens, presented by freelance Photo Journalist, Margaret Waage.

Dues are currently being collected for 2013. They remain the same: $20/individual; $30/couple. Checks can be mailed to the Membership Chair or brought to the October meeting.

Tickets to the November 1, 2012 Watertown Garden Club Tea which will feature a noted foral designer, RuthL, are now on sale. Contact Michelle (860) 274-0215 or Penny (860) 417-3148 to purchase a ticket. They are going FAST! Club members are asked to provide home-baked cookies. The ALS walk in support of Marilyn Dillon's son, Brian. You can contact Marilyn for details or to make a donation. Family and friends can also donate directly through the ALS website. The walk is scheduled for September 29, 2012 in New Britain.

July 12, 2012:  Garden Luncheon with Elizabeth Rinaldi. Again, Liz exceeded everyone's expectations, with the luncheon being so inviting and enjoyable that the record-breaking temperatures went unnoticed! Thank you, Liz..

June 30, 2012: First Annual WGC Garden Tour . Thank you to our gracious hosts for opening their beautiful gardens to the Club's members and guests. It was a lovely day to spend strolling through these lovingly-tendered and inspirational paths of beauty here in Watertown, CT.

May, 26, 2012:  The 2012 Plant Sale at Flagpole Park was a complete success. A BIG thank you to members of this great community who year after year support the Watertown Garden Club. This year's scholarship recipients were Jeffrey Curless and Hunter Guidess. Congratulations!

Jeffrey, from Nonnewaug HS, describes himself as an outdoors kid. He was pleased to get accepted to the Nonnewaug Agricultural Program where he excelled academically (final weighted GPA of 99.99) and was active with the FFA Forestry and Nursery/Landscaping teams which were honored nationally with silver and gold medals. He volunteered with the CT DEEP as a forester. His long term goals include studying forestry and promotion of conservation and widlife. He is attending the University of Main at Orono, Maine.

Hunter, from Watertown HS, dreams of being a park ranger, out west would be nice, helping to maintain nature's beauty. He has volunteered for many charitable organizations including the Special Olympics' Penguin Plunge, YMCA Camp Mataucha, Thomaston Fish & Game Club and the Bethlehem Fair. He was active in high school sports, participating in both the Watertown Pomperaug hockey team and the Watertown High lacrosse team. His interest in history caused him to be involved in the POH (Preserving Our History) group which interviews and documents war veterans' stories. Many activities while maintaining a 93.44 weighted GPA. He will be majoring in Environmental Sciences and Studies, beginning his studies at the Waterbury Branch of UConn.

May 10, 2012:  "Vegetables," presented by Tom DiMarco, White Flower Farm.

The Plant sale will be held May 26, 2012. Remember to bring your garden-related books, tools and miscellaneous items for the white elephant table.

Members - please send Garden Tour Ticket forms to our Treasurer. The Garden Tour will be held June 30, 2012. Tickets should be purchased no later than June 20th. Further information and updated forms (with Jane's address!) will be available at the June 14, 2012 business meeting.

April 12, 2012:  "Hostas in the Garden," presented by Matt Sanford, Tri- State Hosta Society.

March 8, 2012:  "Spring Wildflowers" presented by Margery Winters, Roaring Brook Nature Preserve. There was just enough time left on sunny, March 8th, after Margery Winters' wonderful presentation of spring wildflowers, to search our own woodlands for a peek at the first wildflower - skunk cabbage! An amazing presentation - engenduring a true appreciation for every living plant, large or small. Suggested reading included: "Bringing Nature Home."

Business items included the announcement of April 19th as the first 2012 Garden Therapy date - contact Jane to participate. The plant sale is scheduled for May 26th. There will be a White Elephant table this year containing items of interest to gardeners. Please bring any items you wish to donate to the April and May meetings (gardening books and magazines, tools, etc.).

Anyone interested in competing for the best summer planter? Suggestions are welcome. Item was tabled to the next meeting.

Because of an interest expressed by members, the May meeting topic presented by Tom DiMarco from White Flower Farms will focus on vegetables.

It was voted that the Club's 2012 Tea will be held on November 8th and the Club's first Garden Tour will be held on June 30th. Final planning for these events will occur at the June 14th regular meeting.

A number of local events of interest were discussed, including rose planting by the Waterbury Garden Club and presentations sponsored by the Kensington Garden Club - see local events for details.

February 9, 2012: Soup and Sandwich Lunch and Penny Auction.
Delicious food was enjoyed by those lucky members who attended the February meeting and even luckier members won their favorite penny auction item.

The Annual Plant Sale is scheduled for May 26th. Please contact Chandrika to share ideas and coordinate your assistance at this important event.

The date for the first Annual WGC Garden Tour is June 30th. Three gardens will be toured, including Liz's, where refreshments will be served. The Tour is open only to members and their guests. Area garden clubs will also be invited. Please contact either Liz or Shelley to offer your assistance in organizing this event.

A WGC Tea is tentatively scheduled for October 11, 2012.

CT Master Gardeners 2012 Annual Symposium is on March 24th. Our Club's Master Garderners are planning to attend. If other members are interested, they can attend as guests. Ct Master Gardeners has details. Contact Liz or Amy if you wish to attend.

The 2012 Philadelphia International Flower Show is being held from March 4th - 11th. The theme is "Hawaii, Islands of Aloha." There are Club members interested in attending and are researching travel options. The AAA is offering a "member getaway" to the show. See details here. Contract Chandrika if interested.

UCONN Garden Conference will take place on March 16, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
